Puro.earth Surpasses One Million Carbon Removal Certificates Issued

Carbon removal platform Puro.earth has reached a major milestone with the issuance of over one million CO₂ Removal Certificates (CORCs), each representing one tonne of verified carbon dioxide removed from the atmosphere. The achievement highlights the platform’s growing role in scaling high-integrity, permanent carbon removal solutions globally.

Since its launch in 2019, Puro.earth has become a key player in the carbon removal market, accelerating innovation and investment in engineered removal technologies. The pace of growth has increased dramatically: while the platform took nearly five years to reach 500,000 CORCs, it doubled that number in just the past year. At this rate, the next million-tonne milestone is expected before mid-2026.

“This is just the beginning,” said Jan-Willem Bode, President of Puro.earth. “We are committed to delivering proven, scalable, and high-quality carbon removal credits, and the next million is already in our sights.”

To date, over 576,000 CORCs have been retired—claimed by companies to offset their emissions—while the remainder continues to support a growing market for durable removals. The certificates are issued under strict, science-based methodologies, with the majority coming from Geologically Stored Carbon (34.3%) and Biochar (34.1%), both regarded for their permanence and scalability.

The United States leads in issuance volume, contributing 45% of all CORCs, followed by Finland, Bolivia, and Brazil. This reflects a strengthening supplier base and expanding project activity, especially in North America.

Corporate pioneers such as Microsoft, Google, and the Frontier Buyers coalition have helped de-risk early investments and build market confidence. New demand is expected from hard-to-abate sectors like aviation, steel, shipping, and chemicals. A recent example includes a 200,000-tonne, four-year agreement between SkiesFifty and Gigablue, a Puro.earth supplier, signaling rising industrial interest.

Industry leaders acknowledged the milestone as a turning point for carbon removal. Diego Justiniano, CEO of Exomad Green, noted the progress in advancing biochar as a viable solution, while Climeworks CCO Adrian Siegrist emphasized the milestone’s role in building momentum for durable removals. South Pole’s Marco Magini credited Puro.earth for helping transform carbon removal from a niche concept into a recognized pillar of climate action.

Vice Chairman Antti Vihavainen highlighted the collaborative nature of Puro.earth’s progress, attributing success to the “courageous investors, pioneering suppliers, and visionary buyers” who have helped shape the emerging carbon removal economy.

With demand increasing and stakeholder engagement deepening, Puro.earth is positioned to remain a central force in scaling verified carbon removal solutions to meet global climate objectives.icon
