Indian Airports Push for Carbon Neutrality with New Reporting Framework and Green Energy Initiatives

India has introduced a new Carbon Accounting and Reporting Framework for airports as part of its ambitious push to achieve carbon neutrality in the aviation sector. The Ministry of Civil Aviation announced that airport operators are now required to map and report their carbon emissions, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality and net zero emissions in a phased approach. This initiative is a key element in India’s broader commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions in civil aviation.

The framework ensures that carbon neutrality is a priority for new greenfield airport projects. Since 2014, India has built 12 new greenfield airports, and sustainability has been integrated into their design and operation from the outset. The ministry’s guidelines now mandate that these new airports, along with existing facilities, align with the country’s long-term goal of reducing carbon emissions across the aviation sector.

Union Minister of Civil Aviation Jyotiraditya Scindia had previously set targets for all airports to transition to 100% green energy by 2023, with a net zero emissions goal set for 2030. To support this transition, the ministry has hosted knowledge-sharing sessions, helping airports adopt carbon accounting standards and best practices.

The shift to sustainable aviation is already evident in India’s green energy adoption. Seventy-three airports have transitioned to 100% green energy since 2014, and airports in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru have received Level 4+ carbon neutrality accreditation from the Airports International Council (ACI), a testament to the progress being made.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has further contributed to this shift by installing solar power plants and procuring green energy from the open market. The rapid adoption of renewable energy by airports underscores India’s dedication to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability across all sectors.icon
