LEGO Advances Sustainability Goals with 50% Sustainably Sourced Materials

LEGO Group has made significant strides toward its sustainability objectives, with half of the materials used for its bricks in 2024 sourced from sustainable options. This marks a substantial increase from just 18% in 2023, reflecting the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.

Of the sustainably sourced materials, 47% were certified mass balance, with approximately 33% derived from renewable sources, while an additional 3% came from segregated sustainable sources. These efforts form part of LEGO’s broader strategy to transition to more sustainable production practices.

LEGO also accelerated initiatives to cut factory emissions, phasing out natural gas heating in its Danish facilities, implementing geothermal energy systems in Hungary, and expanding solar energy capacity by 43% across China, the Czech Republic, and Denmark. These investments align with LEGO’s science-based environmental targets and are expected to drive meaningful reductions in carbon emissions.

Beyond sustainability, LEGO continued to enhance its global impact on childhood education and play. In 2024, over 12 million children worldwide benefited from LEGO’s learning and play initiatives. CEO Niels B Christiansen highlighted the company’s role in advocating for play as an essential part of childhood development, noting the UN General Assembly’s adoption of an International Day of Play as a key milestone.

“Our outstanding performance in 2024 helped reach millions of children around the world with joyful learning-through-play experiences that help them develop the skills they will need to thrive,” Christiansen stated.icon
