Energy company TotalEnergies and industrial gases company Air Products have announced a 15-year agreement to supply green hydrogen, aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at TotalEnergies’ European refineries. This partnership follows TotalEnergies’ initiative last year to secure 500,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.
TotalEnergies operates six refineries in Europe, including three in France, and facilities in Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, along with two biorefineries in France. The company plans to replace 500,000 tons of hydrogen used in its refineries with green hydrogen by 2030, potentially reducing CO2 emissions by about 5 million tons annually.
Hydrogen is critical for transitioning to cleaner energy, especially in sectors where renewable energy like wind or solar is impractical. Currently, most of the 90 million metric tons of hydrogen produced annually are derived from fossil fuels, generating significant pollutants and greenhouse gases. Air Products has committed $15 billion to energy transition projects, including green hydrogen production using renewable energy.
Under the new agreement, Air Products will supply 70,000 tons of green hydrogen per year to TotalEnergies’ Northern European refineries starting in 2030. This supply is expected to help avoid approximately 700,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually.
Additionally, the companies have agreed on renewable power supply, including a 150 MW power purchase agreement (PPA) for TotalEnergies to provide solar energy from a Texas project to Air Products. They also plan to explore PPA opportunities in the UK, Poland, and France.
Seifi Ghasemi, Chairman, President, and CEO of Air Products, stated, “This contract validates our long-term strategy. Demand for clean hydrogen will grow significantly, playing an essential role in decarbonizing heavy industry and other sectors.”
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, added, “We are proud to pioneer the energy transition and contribute to the green hydrogen industry through long-term contracts with our refineries and biorefineries in Europe. Our extended partnership with Air Products, including supplying green power, supports their decarbonization roadmap.”
