Top Palladium and Nickel Miner Unveils 2022 Sustainability Highlights, Commits to Sustainable Growth

In the last decade, Nornickel faced several environmental and workplace safety challenges that tarnished its reputation. However, the miner has made a resolute shift toward improved sustainability practices in recent years. This commitment to change is evidenced in their recent sustainability reports, which showcase a marked reduction in adverse incidents and a significant advancement in sustainable operation.

Key highlights in Nornickel’s 2022 Sustainability Report include a record-breaking reduction in work-related fatalities through enhanced industrial safety measures. The costly environmental Sulphur Programme project is near completion, targeting a 45% reduction in sulphur dioxide emissions for improved air quality in the Arctic city of Norilsk, home to the company’s key production facilities. Nornickel collected 814,000 tons of waste in Norilsk, dismantled buildings, decontaminated polluted areas, and achieved notable reductions in wastewater discharge while increasing waste recycling.

The company, the press release says, prioritised biodiversity research, collaborating with scientists to guide future environmental initiatives. It also reduced greenhouse gas emissions and opened 5,000 jobs, reinforcing its commitment to job creation. Nornickel enhanced its appeal as an employer through competitive compensation packages and initiated the UN-endorsed Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) process to respect the rights of indigenous communities.

The miner introduced new features to enhance sustainability disclosures, providing insights into national sustainable development projects. Extra reports this year additionally cover human rights, responsible supply chains, and climate impacts. Vladimir Potanin, Nornickel’s CEO and biggest shareholder, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to sustainability and its focus on resource efficiency, circular economy practices, and social responsibility, according to the press release.icon
