TES Canada Launches a Major Green Hydrogen Initiative for Québec’s Decarbonization

Aiming for Significant CO2 Reductions

TES Canada H2 has announced a groundbreaking project in Québec, targeting an annual reduction of 800,000 tons of CO2 emissions. This initiative, one of the largest decarbonization projects in the region, aims to position Québec as a forefront leader in green energy transition.

Strategic Location and Economic Impact

Eric Gauthier, General Manager of TES Canada H2, expressed pride in developing this project in the Mauricie region, known as the birthplace of renewable energy in Québec. Located in the Vallée de la transition énergétique, the project is expected to yield substantial economic benefits for Shawinigan and the wider Mauricie region.

Green Hydrogen’s Role in Decarbonization

The project focuses on producing green hydrogen, a carbon-neutral energy source, crucial for sectors that are challenging to electrify. One-third of the produced green hydrogen is designated for long-haul transportation decarbonization, a sector responsible for nearly 10% of Québec’s annual emissions. The rest will be utilized to create e-NG (electric renewable natural gas), offering sustainable solutions for industries with significant emission reduction challenges.

Economic Opportunities and Job Creation

Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, highlighted the project’s potential to create hundreds of sustainable jobs while supplying clean, reliable energy to Québec’s power grid, industry, and transportation sectors. This initiative aligns with the goal of combating climate change and fostering economic prosperity.

Energy Needs and Grid Optimization

A significant portion of the project’s energy requirements will be met by a dedicated 1 GW wind and solar farm. This strategy aims to minimize the impact on Hydro-Québec’s grid and explore optimization opportunities, including load shedding during peak winter periods.

Regional Development and Job Prospects

Jean Boulet, Minister of Labour and Minister responsible for the Mauricie, Abitibi-Témiscamingue, and Nord-du-Québec regions, emphasized the Mauricie region’s potential and its role in building a sustainable future for Québec. The Projet Mauricie is expected to create over 1,000 jobs during construction and more than 200 permanent, specialized positions in a rapidly expanding industry sector.icon
