The regional government of of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo has accepted an initiative from its Ministry of Economy to study the feasibility of setting up a public company for the production of electricity from renewable sources. The Sarajevo Canton, which includes the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, imports almost all of its electricity, and the move is aimed at reducing import dependence and switching to renewable energy sources. The initiative will focus on assessing the wind and solar energy potential at specific locations in the canton.
Potential environmental impact:
The establishment of a public utility for renewable energy production in Sarajevo could significantly reduce the canton’s dependence on imported electricity and decrease its carbon footprint. It would also align with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s obligation to gradually introduce a tax on CO2 emissions and join the European Union’s Emissions Trading System by 2030. The move could also improve the standard of living for citizens by reducing electricity costs, and also increase the competitiveness of the local economy.
