Russia Hosts Over 40 Arctic-Related Events in 2022 as Chair of Arctic Council

Russia has held a total of 43 events in 2022 as part of its two-year chairmanship of the Arctic Council, which focuses on “Responsible Governance for a Sustainable Arctic.” The events covered a range of areas, including supporting the Arctic population and protecting the environment, adapting to the effects of climate change, promoting socioeconomic development, and strengthening multilateral collaboration and scientific cooperation in the Arctic. Russia has also initiated discussions on the protection of the intellectual property rights of Indigenous peoples, the social responsibility of entrepreneurs, and public-private partnerships for the sustainable development of northern ethnic groups. Russia has proposed several projects and initiatives related to the digitalisation of the cultural and linguistic heritage of Indigenous peoples and the development of creative industries and traditional Arctic medicine. It also intends to create an international Arctic scientific station that runs on carbon-free energy, ensuring biosecurity in the region, and a unified digital museum platform.

Russia hosted a variety of events devoted to these issues, including the 4th Northern Sustainable Development Forum in Yakutsk, the Arctic Indigenous Peoples Summit in Moscow, the Conference on Human Health Preservation in the Arctic in Arkhangelsk, the 5th Arctic Telemedicine International Scientific and Training Conference in Naryan-Mar, the Conference on Ensuring a Comfortable Urban Environment in Yakutsk, and the International Youth Model of the Arctic Council. The events were managed by the Roscongress Foundation and aimed to find cost-effective ways of removing carbon dioxide emissions from the Arctic region’s energy system.icon
