Precious and base metals giant Nornickel completes self-assessment for IRMA certification

Nornickel, the Russian producer of base and platinum group metals, announced that it had completed an independent self-assessment of its mining facilities for certification in accordance with the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) Standard. The results of last year’s assessment were reviewed by ENSOR Management Consultants, an independent consultant, which inspected Nornickel mines for preparedness for IRMA certification.

This is a significant development for Nornickel, as the IRMA standard is considered a benchmark of the global mining and metals industry. It comprises four main principles, 26 chapters, and over 400 requirements, including 40 critical ones. It focuses on health and safety, quality of life of workers and communities, as well as compliance with human rights.

“Our efforts to meet this standard are consistent with our goal of becoming a sustainability leader and enhancing our competitive edge in the market,” said Vladimir Zhukov, Nornickel’s Vice President for Investor Relations and Sustainable Development. “Nornickel customers’ demands for eco-friendly products reflect the end consumers’ shared vision for a green and clean planet.”

The self-assessment process involved an in-depth analysis of documents, on-site visits, and interviews with management and employees. It covered eight key mines of the Norilsk and Kola Divisions, including Taimyrsky, Oktyabrsky, Komsomolsky, Skalisty, Zapolyarny, Mayak, Severny, and Kaula-Kotselvaara. Based on the self-assessment results, the company expects to achieve IRMA Transparency, the first level of performance, which precedes higher levels of compliance, such as IRMA 50, 75, and 100.

Nornickel now plans to develop and implement a roadmap of actions to increase the level of compliance with IRMA requirements. This move will not only strengthen the company’s position as a leader in sustainable development but will also cater to the growing demand for eco-friendly products in the market.icon
