Norwegian Companies Partner to Develop Aluminium-Based Floating Offshore Wind Turbines

Norwegian aluminium and energy companies Hydro and World Wide Wind have signed a letter of intent to explore the use of aluminium in the offshore wind industry. The companies plan to develop floating wind turbines designed specifically for offshore conditions, using sustainable and recyclable materials, such as aluminium, in construction. The collaboration involves detailing turbine design, producing prototypes, and building a consortium of industrial partners.

Potential environmental impact:

World Wide Wind’s integrated floating wind turbines are scalable up to 40 MW and will use fewer materials and have a smaller carbon footprint than conventional turbines. The use of aluminium in the construction of the turbines could lead to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly offshore wind industry. The partnership also aims to meet the 2030 floating offshore wind targets set by many countries, which could greatly reduce the industry’s carbon footprint.icon
