Alikhan Avarskiy, Nornickel’s Climate Change Adaptation Lead, highlighted the need for comprehensive assessments of permafrost degradation in the Arctic and water resource availability.

Dmitry Izotov, Head of New Product Development at Nornickel, discussed the company’s advancements in palladium-based catalysts and fuel cells for hydrogen power generation, which show a significant increase in activity compared to existing market products.
Comprehensive Approach to Climate Change
The company’s approach to climate change risk management incorporates the TCFD (Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures) methodology, encompassing strategy, corporate governance, risk management, and metrics. Nornickel has established a Sustainability and Climate Change Committee under its Board of Directors and has developed a Climate Change Policy along with a roadmap to comply with TCFD recommendations.

Nornickel’s commitment to addressing climate change extends to biodiversity research and investment in ecotechnologies. Irina Fitzgerald, Environmental Support Lead at Nornickel, emphasized the importance of understanding that the climate is formed by nature, not just greenhouse gases or industrial emissions. The company’s engagement with indigenous minorities was also a highlight of the conference, with Alexander Shaburkin, Head of Analytics at Nornickel’s Federal and Regional Programmes Department, discussing the company’s efforts to respect indigenous rights and promote traditional crafts.
