Alikhan Avarskiy, Nornickel’s Climate Change Adaptation Lead, highlighted the need for comprehensive assessments of permafrost degradation in the Arctic and water resource availability.

Nornickel is contributing to the fight against climate change through various avenues, including as a supplier of metals for the energy transition and as a developer of new green technologies. Dmitry Izotov, Head of New Product Development at Nornickel, discussed the company’s advancements in palladium-based catalysts and fuel cells for hydrogen power generation, which show a significant increase in activity compared to existing market products.

Comprehensive Approach to Climate Change

The company’s approach to climate change risk management incorporates the TCFD (Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures) methodology, encompassing strategy, corporate governance, risk management, and metrics. Nornickel has established a Sustainability and Climate Change Committee under its Board of Directors and has developed a Climate Change Policy along with a roadmap to comply with TCFD recommendations.

The company’s engagement with indigenous minorities was also a highlight of the conference, with Alexander Shaburkin, Head of Analytics at Nornickel’s Federal and Regional Programmes Department, discussing the company’s efforts to respect indigenous rights and promote traditional crafts.
