Nornickel Initiates Key Environmental Program to Curtail Sulfur Emissions

First Phase Rolls Out

Nornickel is set to inaugurate the first phase of its ambitious sulfur program at the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant on October 25. This initiative marks the beginning of a significant environmental effort detailed in a statement from the company’s Telegram channel. The program is primarily focused on slashing sulfur dioxide emissions.

About the Sulfur Program

The company’s Polar Division is driving the Sulfur Program, an extensive overhaul of the operational facilities at both the Nadezhda Metallurgical and Copper Plants in Norilsk. With a budget exceeding RUB 300 billion, this initiative stands as Nornickel’s most substantial environmental project. It encompasses partial reconfiguration of the metallurgical processes and the establishment of facilities dedicated to sulfur dioxide utilization, supported by necessary infrastructural developments.

This critical environmental venture is integrated into the broader “Clean Air” federal project, representing one of its most extensive efforts.

Innovative Technologies and Logistical Challenges

The program employs cutting-edge technologies enabling the capture of at least 99% of sulfur dioxide emissions from principal smelting operations. These methods are tailored to the unique ore composition of the Norilsk Industrial District and the pyrometallurgical processes in use. They also consider the logistical constraints inherent to Norilsk, such as the absence of year-round railway access, limited seasonal navigation on the Yenisei River, and conditions along the Northern Sea Route.

The captured sulfur dioxide will be converted into sulfuric acid, then neutralized with limestone to produce gypsum, showcasing Nornickel’s commitment to environmental responsibility through innovative solutions.icon
