Namibia is set to receive funding from Germany for the establishment of Africa’s inaugural eco-friendly ironworks
  • The German government is providing 13 million euros to support the establishment of Africa’s first green ironworks.
  • A consortium of three German companies is overseeing the project in Namibia, which will produce green hydrogen to reduce iron ore in a climate-neutral way.
  • The resulting sponge iron can then be shipped to steelworks in Germany.
  • This project aims to decarbonize steel production and create a green hydrogen economy in Namibia.
  • The start of production is planned for the end of 2024, with an initial annual production of 15,000 tonnes of direct reduced iron.
  • Namibia also plays a central role in Germany’s national hydrogen strategy, with plans for a large green hydrogen production project and the construction of wind farms and photovoltaic plants.
