The Rainforest Alliance, an international non-profit dedicated to protecting nature and improving rural livelihoods, has formed a strategic partnership with Mirova, an affiliate of Natixis Investment Managers focused on sustainable investing. This collaboration aims to enhance locally led, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) that benefit climate, biodiversity, and local communities. Leveraging Mirova’s second investment strategy, which seeks to raise €350 million, the partnership will implement impact investing initiatives across Africa, Latin America, and Asia.
This initiative will expand access to Rainforest Alliance certification and Mirova’s financing solutions, contributing to bridging the Nature-based Solutions financing gap, which needs investments to triple to $542 billion annually by 2030. The partnership also supports the Rainforest Alliance’s mission to accelerate its impact, aiming to reach 100 million farmers and workers by 2030.
Mirova’s strategy dedicated to sustainable land use will help identify investment opportunities promoting locally led NbS, such as regenerative agriculture and agroforestry. Regenerative agriculture enhances soil health, carbon sequestration, and water retention, while agroforestry integrates trees into agricultural systems, promoting biodiversity and providing additional income for farmers. These methods harness nature’s benefits to safeguard biodiversity, mitigate climate change, and strengthen community resilience.
The partnership will focus on key sourcing landscapes in Africa, Latin America, and Asia, where sustainable impact investment is crucial. Mirova will collaborate directly with project holders to assess their eligibility for certification, while the Rainforest Alliance will promote Mirova’s financing solutions to farmers in its programs.
Rooted in a mutual dedication to promoting sustainability across food and agriculture, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience, the Rainforest Alliance and Mirova bring significant expertise to the partnership. The Rainforest Alliance has 35 years of experience forging alliances among farmers, citizens, companies, and investors, promoting sustainable and regenerative practices in over 60 countries. Mirova, a certified B-Corp, has financed more than 70 projects and companies that contribute to nature protection and restoration in both emerging economies and developed markets.
Rainforest Alliance CEO Santiago Gowland emphasized the importance of such partnerships in accelerating the transition to net-positive agriculture and forestry at scale. He highlighted the role of private capital in supporting farmers to adopt sustainable and regenerative practices. Anne-Laurence Roucher, Deputy CEO and Head of Private Equity and Natural Capital at Mirova, noted the partnership’s potential to enable more nature-positive projects to access high-quality certification and funding, fostering sustainable economic models that improve local communities’ incomes and rights.
