Global Airfare Hike: The Price of a Greener Sky

The aviation sector is facing an inevitable surge in airfares as it embarks on a monumental US$5 trillion journey towards decarbonization. With the introduction of a tax on airfares by Singapore’s government to fund sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) purchases and Malaysia’s authorization for carriers to impose a carbon levy, the cost of air travel is poised to rise significantly. This uptick is further compounded in Europe, where airlines are experiencing a reduction in their free emissions allowance, already contributing to an increase in ticket prices.

The shift towards SAF, a key strategy for achieving the aviation industry’s 2050 net-zero target, is at the heart of this financial recalibration. SAF’s promise of up to 80% reduced emissions comes at a steep price, often more than double the cost of conventional jet kerosene. This price disparity leaves airlines with little option but to pass these costs onto travelers.

The global push for SAF is gaining momentum, with mandates and levies being implemented across regions from the European Union to Japan, aiming to kickstart a sluggish market and ensure demand for this greener fuel. Singapore, for instance, has set ambitious targets for SAF blending in jet fuel, starting with 1% by 2026 and aiming for 3-5% by 2030, inevitably affecting airfare costs.

Moreover, the financial burden of transitioning to more fuel-efficient aircraft is also trickling down to passengers. For example, Qantas has announced fare increases on domestic routes to cover the costs of incorporating next-generation planes into their fleet.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 will necessitate an investment of up to US$5 trillion, underscoring a stark reality: the financial responsibility of this green transition will be borne by air travelers. As the industry moves forward, passengers are encouraged to embrace the additional costs as an investment in a sustainable future for air travel, acknowledging the role each individual plays in supporting environmental stewardship.icon
