EU Commits Record €3.5 Billion to Ocean Sustainability at Our Ocean Conference

The European Union has pledged a historic €3.5 billion to promote ocean sustainability, marking its largest commitment at the Our Ocean Conference since the initiative began in 2014. This year’s conference, held in Greece, focuses on enhancing global ocean governance and supporting marine conservation and sustainable development across various sectors.

The funding will support 40 action commitments in 2024 aimed at fostering a safe, secure, clean, healthy, and sustainably managed ocean. These initiatives include:icon/wp:list-item –>

  • Maritime Security: €45 million is dedicated to improving maritime security and safety in the Western Indian Ocean and Gulf of Guinea.
  • Mediterranean Support: The EU and Sweden are investing €7.5 million in the Blue Mediterranean Partnership to promote sustainable economic development in the region. Another €2 million will support Southern Mediterranean countries in implementing the ecosystem approach to achieve Good Environmental Status.
