The southern province of Ba Ria–Vung Tau in Vietnam has begun implementing a circular economy development plan in the Con Dao island archipelago, which is the first district in the country to put the economic model into action. The district is aiming to address problems created by the rapidly rising number of visitors, which is expected to reach 300,000 annually by 2030. The Institute for Circular Economy Development at the Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, believes that now is the perfect time to apply a circular economy in Con Dao district, due to its high living standards, potential for renewable energy, and its size and population.
Potential environmental impact
The implementation of a circular economy in the Con Dao island district could lead to significant environmental benefits. The circular economy refers to a sustainable economic model that aims to reduce waste and pollution, while promoting the use of renewable energy. This could help to mitigate the negative impact of the rising number of visitors on the local environment, while also promoting sustainable development in the area. Additionally, the application of renewable energy sources in the district could also contribute to reducing carbon emissions and mitigating the effects of climate change.
