China to Establish 70 National Carbon Standards by End of 2024

China has announced an ambitious plan to standardize carbon emission calculations across key sectors as part of its efforts to meet carbon reduction targets. By the end of 2024, the country aims to publish 70 national standards on carbon accounting, footprint, reduction, capture, utilization, and storage. This initiative will encompass all key sectors and companies, as outlined by the National Development and Reform Commission, the State Administration for Market Regulation, and the Ministry of Emergency Management.

A standardized calculation and evaluation system will be established by 2025, ensuring that businesses, projects, and products adhere to world-leading benchmarks for energy consumption control. The plan focuses on accelerating the development of national carbon footprint standards for new energy vehicles, photovoltaic products, and lithium batteries, which are crucial for China’s export growth.

The initiative also aims to standardize the carbon footprint of products such as electronics, plastics, and construction materials. These efforts are part of China’s broader commitment to enhance mechanisms for green and low-carbon development, improve the cap-and-trade system for carbon emissions, and achieve peak carbon emissions by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060.icon
