BCG Signs Their Largest-ever SAF Deal to Eliminate 100,000 Tons of CO2 Emissions

Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has entered into a significant agreement to purchase sustainable aviation fuel certificates (SAFc) from World Energy, marking its largest such transaction to date. This five-year contract aims to reduce 100,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to the emissions from flying 177,000 economy-class passengers round trip between Boston and London. This ambitious move is part of BCG’s broader strategy to achieve a net-zero climate impact by 2030.

The sustainable aviation fuel, produced using advanced hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) from waste fats and oils, will be certified to meet stringent industry standards for sustainability. This deal is a continuation of BCG’s active role in sustainable aviation, initiated with its participation in the World Economic Forum’s Clean Skies for Tomorrow coalition in 2019. World Energy, a leader in the SAF market, offers fuel that achieves more than 80% emissions reduction compared to conventional jet fuel.

David Webb, BCG’s Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized the importance of innovative solutions like SAF in achieving aggressive emission reduction targets. Meanwhile, World Energy CEO Gene Gebolys highlighted the critical role of such collaborations in decarbonizing the aviation sector, one of the most challenging industries to abate.

This deal also involves the SAFc Registry, ensuring transparency and consistency in the trading of SAF certificates, and aligns with BCG’s participation in the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance’s collective procurement efforts.icon
