Air France-KLM has signed a new agreement with energy giant TotalEnergies for the delivery of 1.9 billion liters of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) over the next decade. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) extends their existing partnership, building on a 2022 contract for the supply of 800,000 tons of SAF. This latest deal further advances Air France-KLM’s decarbonization efforts, with TotalEnergies providing sustainable fuel that reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 90% over the entire fuel lifecycle compared to traditional fossil fuels.
The SAF will be used primarily for flights departing from France and the Netherlands, aligning with European regulations that mandate increasing SAF usage. Beginning in 2025, European flights will be required to use at least 2% SAF, with that figure expected to rise to 70% by 2050. The sustainable fuel supplied by TotalEnergies will be produced from waste and residues that do not compete with food sources, and it will be certified by sustainability organizations like the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB).
Air France-KLM aims to reduce its CO2 emissions per passenger/km by 30% by 2030, using a combination of fleet renewal, operational efficiencies, and a greater reliance on SAF. The agreement with TotalEnergies plays a crucial role in the airline’s strategy to meet these ambitious goals.
Benjamin Smith, CEO of Air France-KLM, described the deal as a key step toward securing the sustainable fuel volumes needed to decarbonize aviation activities. He emphasized the importance of a robust SAF sector for Europe’s energy independence and industry needs. Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, highlighted the company’s decade-long commitment to SAF, noting that it represents a “win-win” for both the aviation and industrial sectors.
TotalEnergies has set ambitious production targets, aiming to produce 1.5 million tons of SAF annually by 2030, further bolstering Europe’s transition toward sustainable aviation.
